The Boy and the Heron

Credit: Studio GhibliStudio Ghibli’s new film The Boy and the Heron is purportedly legendary director Hayao Miyazaki’s last. It’s also his first film in a decade.

The Japanese director claimed to be retiring with Studio Ghibli’s The Wind Rises, but went on to make The Boy and the Heron, which has so far only released in Japan.

The movie has remained shrouded in mystery despite being out in Japan. For many of us, this is our first glimpse at the film, which looks very Studio Ghibli. Film ticket site Fandango released the images on social media:

Studio Ghibli changed the name of the film from How Do You Live?—a truly terrible title for a film—to The Boy and the Heron, which is based off of a 1937 novel of the same name, though the film has its own original story.

No trailers, plot summaries, images or marketing of any kind has been done for the film, though at this point any Studio Ghibli / Hayao Miyazaki film is bound to do well. The Boy and the Heron debuted in Japan on July 14th and has grossed over ¥6.2 billion at the Japanese box office, or about $42.5 million USD. There is no American or global release date at this time.
